The territory south of Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto right down to the sea at Capo di Santa Maria di Leuca is called Salento and is characterized by large groves of secular gnarled olive trees, low rock walls and typical out buildings called “paiare”. Here, not so long ago, man by his sweat and toil produced on his land all he needed to live.
The other borders of Salento are the Adriatic Sea on the East and the Ionian Sea on the West. The Adriatic coast has breathtaking panoramas from the high rocky coastline dotted with fragrant Mediterranean flora and in Spring, fabulous bursts of colourful wild flowers. Crystal clear water makes swimming enjoyable whether you choose the white sandy beaches on the Ionian Sea or diving from the rocks into emerald green water on the Adriatic side. Walking, bicycling, boating and horseback riding are other occasions of relaxing and enjoying nature.
